UPDATE: The issue blocking new Wii U and 3DS accounts from playing online has since been remedied. You can read more about the entire situation at the Pretendo Network. You can also see our original post below.

While Nintendo ended purchases of Wii U and 3DS eShop titles a number of months back, people have still been able to hop online and play their favorites games with online connectivity. We’ve also known for awhile now that the time to enjoy those services is limited, as Nintendo is going to turn off Wii U/3DS online play in April 2024. Unfortunately, it looks like that date may have come sooner for a select number of players.

It’s been discovered that just recently, new Wii U and 3DS owners are currently unable to connect online to play games. That means if you’re getting a Wii U or 3DS as a gift and were looking to play online in games like Splatoon, Super Mario Maker, Mario Kart 8 and so on, you’re currently blocked from doing so.

It’s not known if this lack of online interactions is planned or due to an issue on Nintendo’s end, but for the time being, the end result is the same. Seeing as how Nintendo literally sold just one new Wii U back in Sept. 2023, it’s likely this won’t be an issue for the vast majority of people out there. Still though, with it being the holiday season, someone out there is bound to get one of these legacy platforms as a gift.

I did never buy a Switch because Nintendo apparently still wants to support the throwaway society. Their older consoles deserve much better, there are still many millions of them out there. They should keep them alive and create some new experiences for them as well every now and then.

I can get screwing over the Wii U (although I wouldn't endorse that), but the 3DS? It's immensely unfair.
