Earlier this week the lineup for EVO 2024 was revealed, and while there was some Switch love, Smash Bros. Ultimate was nowhere to be found. This wasn’t really a surprise, as Nintendo parted ways with EVO awhile back for a litany of reasons. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely we’ll ever know the full picture as to why Nintendo left, but the people behind EVO are always ready to have them back.

While Smash Bros. Ultimate isn’t a part of EVO 2024, that doesn’t mean it can’t return in future years. In an interview with Dexerto, EVO General Manager Rick Thiher opened up on the possibilist of Smash making a return, and it sounds like his team is always ready for this to come together.

“Always happy to host Smash. Always happy to engage with that community. I was really excited to see parts of the Nintendo licensing program that has kind of stabilized in the last few months,” he added. “We’re seeing more and more licensed events out in the market for those titles. Don’t know what the future holds today and we will find out whenever it arrives.”

Nintendo isn't coming back to EVO since Sony owns the event now. A 3rd party would have to buyout EVO from Sony and said 3rd party needs to not be a competitor to Nintendo to even have Nintendo entertain the idea of joining EVO again.

I think at this point Nintendo would be fine doing without fighting game events...at least until Smash 6 becomes a thing allowing Smash Bros. World Championships to be a thing again.
