There was a time when Nintendo used their own engines for every single game they released. That slowly started to shift a number of years ago, and now Nintendo’s titles are a mix of proprietary engines and off-the-shelf options. In the case of Princess Peach: Showtime, we now know Nintendo used a third party’s engine to get the job done.

Thanks to some back-of-the-box images that popped up in Japan, we’ve learned that Princess Peach: Showtime! uses Unreal Engine 4 to bring the game to life. This makes it just the third Nintendo title to utilize Unreal Engine 4, with the others being Yoshi’s Crafted World and Pikmin 4.

The only other bit of information we’re waiting on pertains to just who Nintendo worked with to develop Princess Peach: Showtime!. It’s possible that Nintendo handled the game’s development entirely internally, but it seems much more likely they partnered with another studio to get the job done. Hopefully we get some insight on that area soon.
