Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS didn’t reach their full potential in terms of audience, largely due to the Wii U failing to break through in any region. This certainly seemed like a disappointing result for Sakurai, but things worked out in the end, as Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS became the base for Smash Bros. Ultimate, which is not only the best-selling Smash game, but the best-selling fighting game ever as well.

Between Smash Bros. Wii U/3DS and Smash Bros. Ultimate, Sakurai has been working on Smash Bros. for an insane 11 years at the very least, and it’s likely much longer than that. The bulk of that time has been spent on Smash Bros. Ultimate, but thankfully it seems Sakurai can finally get some rest.

With the Sora amiibo now releasing for Smash Bros. Ultimate, Sakurai has noted that work for the game has officially come to a close. Sakurai shared this message with his followers on X, and you can read the entire (machine-translated) comments below.

Sora amiibo released today! Thank you very much to everyone involved. (I think it’s amazing) The original perfect design and the color coding are precise and perfect. The sculpt and pose are both good. Now that all the fighters have been made into amiibo, I guess my work on “Smash Bros. Ultimate” is finally coming to an end. Thank you for your hard work.

I don't know what they do next. I don't think the answer is "Smash Bros. but with EVEN MORE characters!"

I think I might light to see a new kind of game created where Nintendo characters can battle each other. Take a break from Smash Bros for a while, and bring it back sometime down the road with some new characters and ideas.

End of an era! I’m still trying to find a few for my collection, but was able to get Sora.
