As soon as Pepper Grinder was revealed, longtime Nintendo fans were quick to point out that the game seemed to be somewhat of a spiritual successor to Drill Dozer. It’s very true that Drill Dozer was a source of inspiration for Pepper Grinder, but it turns out some other big pieces of entertainment were just as important.

In an interview with Nintendo Life, Pepper Grinder creator Riv Hester opened up about the game, anime and comic inspirations that helped bring this 2D adventure to life. Turns out quite a few Nintendo titles played an integral part in Pepper Grinder’s existence!

Oh yeah, you can see influences from all my favourite platformers growing up in there. Donkey Kong Country 2, Yoshi’s Island, Sonic 2, 3 & Knuckles, Drill Dozer for sure though I only got to play that after starting work on Pepper Grinder. There are stages involving cannons that are just obvious love letters to Donkey Kong Country. There are also inspirations from other media like Tank Girl, Gurren Lagann, and the art of Yoshitomo Nara.
