Unicorn Overlord has been a big hit for ATLUS and Vanillaware, and they’re lucky it was. The title has been in development for quite a long time, and Vanillaware recently stated that they spent every last penny they had on the title. Thankfully, fans flocked to the title and its already sold over 500k units worldwide.

With Unicorn Overlord having such a lengthy development period, it’s no surprise to hear plans for the game were quite different years ago. According to a GamerBraves interview with Unicorn Overlord producer Akiyasu Yamamoto, Switch wasn’t even in the picture when the game was first being put together.

“When Atlus and Vanillaware began work on Unicorn Overlord in 2016, the game was only intended for the PS4 and PS Vita. However, the gaming industry has gone through some radical changes over the past 8 years, and as a result, Vanillaware was asked to give Unicorn Overlord a simultaneous worldwide release and expand its development to the PS5, Switch, and Xbox X/S.”

Thankfully those plans changed, and the game came to Switch where it was met with physical sellouts in Japan. With that kind of success, you’d think DLC was a shoe-in to grab some more cash from dedicated fans. Well, according to Yamamoto that is not the case, as there are no DLC plans in the works for the time being.
