The Switch juggernaut continues to move millions of units worldwide, and there’s no doubt the system will keep up its steady sales this holiday season following a rather fantastic Nintendo Direct. The thing is, if sales are strong enough in the U.S. this holiday season, Nintendo could see the Switch claim another record.

According to Circana’s Mat Piscatella, the Switch is well within striking distance of the PS2’s total sales in the U.S.. According to Piscatella, as of May 4th, 2024, the Switch is just 1.41 million units away from surpassing the PS2’s hardware sales total in the United States. With Mario & Luigi: Brotherhood, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, Super Mario Party Jamboree and plenty of other games coming this year, it seems quite likely the Switch will best the PS2’s total.

If the Switch does surpass PS2 sales in the U.S., that would make it the second best-selling piece of hardware in the region. The only other platform it would have to surpass is another Nintendo release, the Nintendo DS.

Seeing the games coming from that latest Direct, this is a slam dunk. Switch will be the best-selling console of all time. What a great system. I wish Iwata had lived to see it.

Oh, I can't wait until that day comes. First Japan, then US, and then we'll just need to take down PS2 in its primary territories of the EU and South America.
