Switch games sweep Japan's top 10 best-selling games of 2023 (Updated with top 100)

Nintendo literally couldn't do any better!

We’ve already talked a bit about how 2023 was yet another good year for Nintendo and the Switch, and that was particularly true in Japan. As we’ve shared, the Switch sold another 4 million units in Japan last year, making for the highest total a system has ever moved in its 7th year. Turns out a similar success was replicated on the software side of things as well.

With 2023 officially behind us, we now know the top 10 software sales in Japan for last year. Believe it or not, you won’t find anything but Switch games in that top 10. Having a majority in top 10 software sales is one thing, but completely shutting out all other platforms is another!

Have a look at Japan’s top 10 best-selling physical games of 2023 below.

  1. The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom: 1,929,603
  2. Super Mario Bros. Wonder: 1,549,401
  3. Pikmin 4: 1,119,027
  4. Pokémon Scarlet & Violet: 907,432
  5. Momotaro Dentetsu World: 795,681
  6. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: 617,223
  7. Kirby’s Return to Dreamland Deluxe: 514,581
  8. Dragon Quest Monsters 3: The Dark Prince: 510,477
  9. Splatoon 3: 503,312
  10. Super Mario RPG: 447,687

Just to put things in perspective, this marks the 19th year in a row where Nintendo titles have dominated the top 10. They’ve been in the majority for every since year during that time, but it’s not every year that the complete top 10 is Nintendo-only!

An extremely impressive statistic during its seventh year on the market. Follows some logical sense when you consider the number of units sold. It’s a testament to both the platform strength and Nintendo’s consolidation of their software development divisions around a single platform. They can point to this and know that they made the right decisions.

Would be a shame and a travesty if all these switch carts Japan is buying suddenly aren’t compatible with the next platform… I doubt that would happen but just sayin’
