Sea-faring sandbox game "Ylands: Nintendo Switch Edition" launches June 20th, 2024
Nearly time to set sail
Calling all seaworthy explorers! Bohemia Interactive is thrilled to announce the upcoming release of Ylands: Nintendo Switch™ Edition, which will be available exclusively for digital download on the Nintendo Switch on June 20th worldwide. This release marks Bohemia Interactive’s second game on the Nintendo Switch platform, following the previous success of Vigor.
Ylands: Nintendo Switch™ Edition (priced at $24.99 USD/€24.99 EUR) is the ultimate creative open-world adventure game. Prepare to be immersed in an enchanting, low-poly universe, optimized to deliver a seamless gaming experience on the Nintendo Switch console. The game features core gameplay mechanics focused on exploration, sailing, crafting, building, and light survival elements. This combination of mechanics offers a unique and engaging experience for players of all ages.
On their own fully customizable ship, players will traverse six distinct regions, each filled with unique fauna, flora, and random encounters that keep the adventure fresh and exciting. Ylands empowers players to make use of thousands of items to craft and build with, progressing through a comprehensive tech tree that adds depth and variety to the gameplay. The game gently onboards players by recruiting them to the Classy Adventurers Guild, where they embark on an incredible journey, armed with their trusty handbook, and sail towards endless adventures.
What makes the Ylands: Nintendo Switch™ Edition version of the game unique, is that it will be available as a single-player offline game, which offers the popular Adventure and Creative game modes to cater to different play styles.
Perhaps better known for their genre-defining hits Arma and DayZ, Bohemia Interactive has been redeveloping Ylands to ensure players have a fantastic experience whether they are playing at home or on the go, on their TV screens or via handheld with the following changes worth highlighting:
Play Ylands Offline For The First Time
Ylands: Nintendo Switch™ Edition will be able to be played fully offline only, which is a first for this series. After download and initial launch, players don’t need an active internet connection to play the game. All player game worlds, creations and progress is stored locally which ensures smooth uninterrupted sailing, wherever they choose to play.
Buy Once, Play Forever
While Ylands on PC is a free-to-play title Bohemia Interactive has elected for a simpler pay upfront premium model for Ylands: Nintendo Switch™ Edition. This, in combination with its offline nature, means there are no pay-to-progress mechanics, less of a need to grind in order to accumulate resources and no monetisation pushes. All planned updates for Ylands: Nintendo Switch™ Edition will always be included for no additional cost with the option to purchase optional cosmetic DLC packages also supported.
Optimised Controls and UI with Stable Framerate
Ylands: Nintendo Switch™ Edition has been optimised to take full advantage of Nintendo Switch hardware, boasts a stable framerate and a user interface that has been designed with both TV and handheld play in mind.
Safe Single Player For All Ages
Due to its offline structure, Ylands: Nintendo Switch™ Edition is a 100% safe gaming environment for younger players with zero microtransaction prompts and no risk of negative interactions with other players. There is no gore or graphic violence in the game, which makes it a perfect experience for younger players.
Adventure and Creative Modes
Ylands: Nintendo Switch™ Edition is an experience that supports and encourages creative development and thinking at every stage. There are virtually unlimited building opportunities available to the player; both in the more story-centric Adventure mode and the sandbox-orientated Creative mode. If players don’t wish to create from the ground-up it will also be possible to purchase different types of buildings, ships and even pets via the Nintendo eShop. With the full release scheduled for next month (June), excited adventurers can now add Ylands: Nintendo Switch™ Edition to their wishlist on the Nintendo eShop. This is the perfect opportunity to prepare for an engaging and creative adventure where your skills in exploration, crafting, and survival will be put to the test in a beautiful and enchanting world.

In both a Standard Edition and a Deluxe Calamity Edition, players are invited to slice their way to the rotten core of Slave Zero X’s grisly tale of vengeance. Both editions also include the updated mega-challenging boss battle: SovKhan 300%.

The Calamity Edition
- All elements of the Standard Edition

Chief among the goodies in the Calamity Edition is the official art book, with all its wonderfully grotesque and imaginatively bizarre art. Led by Francine Bridge and the Slave Zero X art team and heavily Inspired by H.R. Giger & Anno’s Evangelion, the team created a new take on a dystopian savage future, biomecha artforms, and nubile — yet powerful — characters from all levels of society. The art book is a 150-page love story that visually builds the world sketch by sketch, setting the foundation for the game design — and imagination beyond.
Additionally, Ziggurat partnered with Andy Lanning and Ant Williams, two Marvel and DC Comics legends who’ve worked on properties such as Guardians of the Galaxy and Batman, for an official comic miniseries for Slave Zero X. Included in the Calamity Edition, the miniseries depicts the backstory of several major characters from the game, all set in a dystopian biopunk setting. These comics are available in the Calamity Edition of Slave Zero X and in the Digital Deluxe version on PC.
Slave Zero X is available to purchase from these retailers at USD $29.99 for the Standard Edition and USD $49.99 for the Calamity Edition.

The Nintendo Switch is losing its Twitter/X integration next month (UPDATE)
Friend requests via social media are also going away
The Nintendo Switch will be losing its Twitter/X functionality on June 10th, 2024, the company announced, ironically via Twitter.
This’ll be affecting sharing posts in Splatoon 2, and, to a lesser extent, Splatoon 3, as well. Friend requests through social media will also be made unavailable. Here’s the full statement:
- The feature for posting screenshots and videos to X (formerly Twitter) from the Album in the Nintendo Switch HOME Menu will become unavailable.
- While posting screenshots and videos to Facebook will continue to be available, this service may also be discontinued at a later date.
- The ability to post Super Smash Bros. Ultimate screenshots from the Album in the Nintendo Switch HOME Menu to Smash World, in the Nintendo Switch Online smart device app, will also become unavailable.
- Posting features in the Nintendo Switch title Splatoon 3 will be adjusted. When posting from the mailbox in Splatsville, Inkopolis Plaza, or Inkopolis Square, you will no longer be able to post to X (formerly Twitter) or Facebook; the data will be sent directly to Nintendo servers. This change will allow users to make posts without one of these social media accounts, but images posted by players younger than 13 will not be visible to other players.
- The image created for the post will be copied to the Album in the Nintendo Switch HOME Menu. Images in the Album can be transferred to a smart device wirelessly or to a PC via USB cable.
- Posting features in the Nintendo Switch title Splatoon 2 will be adjusted. You will no longer be able to post to X (formerly Twitter) from the mailbox in Inkopolis Square. The characters that appear and posts that are displayed in the Square will be replaced by data already prepared within the game software.
- The feature for sending friend requests to social media friends via the Friend Suggestions menu on My Page, in the Nintendo Switch HOME Menu, will no longer be available.
- You can continue to use the friend suggestions feature from smart devices, Nintendo 3DS, and Wii U.
Unfortunately, it looks like sharing your Switch screenshots will be a lot harder for a lot of users. Hopefully some Twitter integration still comes to the next console.
UPDATE: Twitter/X has released a statement on this matter and you can read it in full below.
The gaming community is one of the largest and most vibrant communities on our platform, and we are dedicated to enhancing and supporting gaming-related features. As part of Nintendo’s planned discontinuation of sharing content to X from the Nintendo Switch, from June 11th, users will need to download Switch gameplay media directly to their smartphones and share it natively on our platform.
We worked together with Nintendo throughout this process to ensure API access for this integration, but ultimately it was a product decision made by Nintendo.
Our partnership with Nintendo remains strong, and we are working together to ensure a smooth transition for all users. We will continue collaborating with partners to bring new and exciting experiences to our global gaming community.
Nintendo remains committed to physical media with Switch's successor (UPDATE)
Boxed copies aren't going anywhere
Digital has been a big part of all game companies in the last decade, so much so that many studios have been releasing their titles digital-only. Rest assured, Nintendo will continue going the physical and digital round moving forward.
Nintendo recently shared their fiscal year results, and that was followed by the usual investor Q&A. During that meeting, Nintendo was asked about their efforts in the digital space, as digital sales continue to grow for Nintendo. While Nintendo will certainly expand their digital offerings as time goes on, they also remain committed to physical software releases as well.
You can see what Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa had to say on the matter below. (Please note that this is a fan translation of the Japanese transcripts of the Q&A, courtesy of Nicolas10111 on Reddit.)
Our basic policy is not to simply increase the ratio of digital sales, but to maximize sales of game software, including sales of packaged software, and this policy will remain unchanged in the future. Under these circumstances, we need to increase convenience for both customers who play the packaged version of the software and customers who play the downloaded version, and we hope to continue to make further improvements and innovations in the future.
UPDATE: We now have the official translation of Nintendo’s comments on this matter, and you can see them below.
