Your favorite Square Enix tunes revamped
Square Enix has released two teaser trailers for a pair of upcoming albums, and they’re both filled with fresh takes on classic game tunes.
Popular songs from Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy, NieR;Automata and many other Square Enix franchises are being transformed into chill, Lo-fi sounds, and up-tempo dance tracks with Mellow Minstrel Mix & Airship Cruise Beats Volume 3. Both of these albums are available to stream right now, and you can check out samples from each above.
If you’d like to hear both of these albums in their entirety, make sure to check out the official website for Mellow Minstrel Mix & Airship Cruise Beats Volume 3. There’s no word yet on a physical release for these albums outside of Japan, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled.
Framing things nicely
Earlier today, Microsoft revealed that they’re bringing both Pentiment and Grounded to the Switch. Pentiment comes to the Switch tomorrow, while we’ll have to wait until April 16th, 2024 for Grounded.
We’ve gotten all the usual gameplay details and assets out of the way for both Pentiment and Grounded, but are there more tidbits to glean from today’s reveal trailers? The video above aims to do just that, diving deep into both reveals to try and decipher just how well these titles will run on Switch.
While not official by any means, the trailers for both Pentiment and Grounded offer up an interesting tidbit. With a bit of analysis done, we can see that both games, at least in trailer form, are running at 60fps. That’s not really a surprise with the 2D Pentiment, but it’s pretty shocking for Grounded. While Grounded clearly has taken a hit in the visual department during the porting process, it seems that may have helped the dev team eek out a 60fps approach, even if it’s variable instead of steady.
Welcome back, Mickey!
Earlier today, THQ Nordic today announced Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed, a faithful remake of the beloved classic adventure, is being developed by Purple Lamp in collaboration with Disney Games. The development team was assisted in the remaster by Warren Spector, director of the original Disney Epic Mickey.
If you played Epic Mickey on the Wii, you might be curious as to how this Switch remake is shaping up. While we don’t have the specifics on the tech side of things, we do have a video that shows the debut Rebrushed trailer as compared to the Wii original. Check out the video above to see how far things have come!
In this classic action-adventure game, players will send Mickey Mouse, armed with a magical paintbrush, on an epic creative journey to brave the dangerous world of Wasteland. Through exciting levels inspired by classic Disney stories, players will paint their path and face a variety of challenges along the way. Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed is scheduled for release for Switch in 2024.
A voice for the voiceless
Night School Studio has started a new video series that gives a behind-the-scenes look at the work that went into both OXENFREE and OXENFREE II. The first installment of this series reveals how the studio crafted the terrifying voices of the ghostly transmissions in OXENFREE and OXENFREE II.
OXENFREE is a supernatural thriller about a group of friends who unwittingly open a ghostly rift. You are Alex, and you’ve just brought your new stepbrother Jonas to an overnight island party gone horribly wrong.
In OXENFREE II, Five years after the events of OXENFREE, Riley returns to her hometown of Camena to investigate mysterious radio signals. What she finds is more than she bargained for.
Guardians of the Borderlands
- Following a series of reshoots that took place in January of this year, the Borderlands movie will see release on August 9th, 2024. As far as we know, this will be a theater release only, so you’ll have to make the trip to your local movie theater if you want to see this one at launch.
Ahead of the movie’s launch, we’re finally getting a look at how things have come together. The very first full-length trailer has been shared, following stills, a teaser video and posters that launched yesterday. You can check out the trailer above!
Along with that trailer, IGN has posted a very special breakdown with Randy Pitchford, the guy calling the shots at Borderlands developer Gearbox. He has all kinds of insight to offer into the trailer, including a breakdown of shots, designs, and much more. If you’re looking for more details on the movie than the trailer provides, this is the video to check out.
Want even more behind-the-scenes talk on everything that went into adapting Borderlands from the world of videogames to the silver screen? Entertainment Weekly had the chance to talk to director Eli Roth on what it was like tackling this behemoth to offer something that fans will appreciate and newcomers can enjoy as well. You can see their special feature on the movie here.
In the Borderlands movie, Lilith (played by 2x Oscar winner Cate Blanchett), is an infamous treasure hunter with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home planet of Pandora to find the missing daughter of Atlas (Edgar Ramirez), the universe’s most powerful S.O.B. She forms an unexpected alliance with a ragtag team of misfits – Roland (Kevin Hart), once a highly respected soldier, but now desperate for redemption; Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt), a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg (Florian Munteanu), Tina’s musclebound, rhetorically challenged protector; Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis), the scientist who’s seen it all; and Claptrap (Jack Black), a persistently wiseass robot.
The hits keep coming
Multiple installments in the Final Fantasy series have stood the test of time due to their amazing gameplay, characters, and more. Truth be told, sometimes it’s the game’s soundtrack that helps elevate it to an amazing degree, and that is without a doubt true of Final Fantasy VII.
In honor of the amazing tunes of Nobuo Uematsu, Square Enix has started a Final Fantasy VII video soundtrack series on YouTube. The series pulls unforgettable tunes from Final Fantasy VII and mixes them with gameplay straight from the original version of the game. We’re not sure how many of these video soundtrack releases there will be, but the latest batch is available to stream right now, and you can enjoy them below.

Not the best of the platform's library
Here we have a pair of games that don’t do much more than simply exist. Neither is bad, and Hoops in particular has its charms, but they don’t move the needle at all outside of giving kids in 1989 something additional (if not something new) to do with their free time.
Neither game feels entirely complete as a product, especially Shooting Range, a game that appears to have been hastily edited into a kinder, gentler gun-based experienced at the last second. But neither of these games will give you rabies or anything. They are video game product at its most competent.
Aping the original
Digital Foundry are back to check out the latest Switch remake of a Game Boy Advance classic - Mario vs Donkey Kong. Each level is recreated 1:1 to the original 2004 release, only this time using a visual style akin to the New Super Mario Bros games. As an extra bonus, we also get beautifully animated CG cut-scenes, based on the stills used in the Game Boy Advance version.
Want to know more about how this Switch remake measures up to the original? Here’s a breakdown of the finer points:
-1080p docked and 720p handheld - 60fps in either mode - no anti-aliasing - AMD’s FidelityFX is listed amongst the credits - enemies possess both circular shadows and more realistic shadows - evidence of color transfer from the environment onto shiny objects
