Just the other day, we shared a feature that included comments from Reggie Fils-Aimé on blockchain technology and NFTs. In Reggie’s own words, he’s ‘bullish’ on both trends, and certainly sees a future for them. If you wanted to hear more about why Reggie feels that way, we now have further comment.

Stemming from Reggie’s SXSW 2022 keynote, we now have full quotes from the man himself to explain why he feels the way he does.

So I’m a believer in blockchain, I think it’s a really compelling technology. I’m also a believer in the concept of “play to own” within video games, and I say this as a player where I may have invested 50 hours, 100 hours, or 300 hours in a game, and when I’m ready to move on to something else, wouldn’t it be great to monetize what I’ve built? I bet I’d have some takers here today if I wanted to sell my Animal Crossing island from the latest Nintendo Switch version; I’d like to be able to monetize that. Blockchain technology embedded in the code would enable me to do that.

Now I say that in the context of “it needs to make sense for the player”. It can’t just be an approach by the developer that it’s interesting or it’s a way for them as a development entity to make more money. In the end it’s got to be good for the player, but I see an opportunity.

[Reggie Fils-Aimé]

While Reggie might be all about the blockchain and NFTs, the majority of gamers seem very against those ideas, especially if they bleed into the world of video games. As for Nintendo’s stance on these matters, that’s anyone’s guess!

Nope nope nope nope and nope. You can do play to own WITHOUT a blockchain. It adds nothing of value and just makes it so people waste cpu cycles and electricity to verify it and makes transactions really slow. When your "currency" (asset really) can only handle maybe 8 transactions per second on a good day, it's not a currency. They're also all susceptible to 51% attacks.

Booo! Boooo I say.

Reggie has been out of touch for a few years now at the very least. He may be a good boss, but the fact that he sees the blockchain and NFTs as a positive thing makes you realize that he is just like every other CEO or head of a company, obsessed with money. Ironically though, while talking about how it needs to be good for the player.

Who the hell would buy an Animal Crossing island? If anything it would just inspire more people to hack and mod their Switches and just create a completely different universe for some people that play that game.

Wasn’t a keynote, it was just a panel discussion.

Sounds good Reggie…up until the part where corporations realize they too can make money off the blockchain, and then all of our games turn into virtual shopping malls and advertisement centers.

Save that stuff for the metaverse or whatever crap they are trying next….but keep it out of video games.
