Game Boy devs on what it's like to make games for the classic handheld
Keeping the dream alive
It used to be that once a video game system was dead, it was dead forever, but not anymore! Thanks to indie retro revivals in the gaming community, as well as platforms like Kickstarter, we’re still seeing new games pop up for older systems. One of the big ones right now is Nintendo’s original Game Boy, with games still being produced on physical carts by a handful of devoted devs.
Four of those Game Boy developers spoke with Nintendo Life about the process and experience of creating games for such a classic handheld device. The devs in question are Ollie Coe (Life’s Too Short), Cesar Aminio (Glory Hunters), Matt Hughson (From Below), and 7FH (Gunship DX).
A few of the interviewees detail the difficulties of creating games for an outdated device, including making everything fit into a very small file size. Some also mention GB Studio, a platform designed to make developing for the Game Boy easier and more accessible. Here’s a snippet from the interview, in which Matt Hughson explains why he decided to port his game From Below to the Game Boy:
I guess the root motivation was that I love the Game Boy. And I think maybe a technical reason I was interested in doing a port was because I write most of my games in C instead of Assembly – which most old games were written in. Now to rewrite them in C you pay the cost of performance. I wrote From Below for the NES 99% in C with some bits from some Assembly libraries and then there are also libraries for the Game Boy which allow you to compile C, so I could take the core engine and just compile the game on the Game Boy with little to no work for the core gameplay. So that interested me, the thought that I could take the exact same game and run it on Game Boy – though there’s obviously a lot more work to it than that.
The two biggest challenges were the resolution change and the multiplayer. It’s lower resolution than the NES, the Game Boy’s about 144 [pixels] high and 160 wide whereas the NES is 256 by 240 – so basically cut in half. In addition to that, for the Tetris-style gameplay the traditional board is 10 blocks wide and 20 blocks high; on the Game Boy render is 8x8 sprites, so if you do the math you can’t actually fit that in on the Game Boy screen.

Yars Rising from WayForward and Atari announced for Switch in 2024
The sequel to a beloved classic
A brand new game has been announced for the Switch from developer WayForward and Atari. Yars Rising is a side scrolling action platformer, and sequel to the classic Atari game Yars’ Revenge. It’s scheduled for release sometime in 2024 on the Nintendo Switch.
From the renowned development studio WayForward Technologies, Inc. (Shantae, River City Girls, Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp) comes Yars Rising, a 2D action adventure exploration of one of Atari’s richest, and best known classic titles.
In WayForward’s experienced hands, the Yars franchise becomes an expansive mystery solved through 2D platforming action. Take control of the young hacker Emi Kimura, who is hired by a mysterious patron to infiltrate the shadowy QoTech corporation. Run, jump, sneak, and hack your way through challenges as you slowly unravel a complex secret shrouded in intrigue.
Emi grows in power throughout her adventure, allowing her to retrace her steps and reach previously inaccessible and secret areas. Her evolving hacking skills are critical to solving stimulating minigames that reference the innovative gameplay from the Atari 2600 title Yars’ Revenge.
The deeper into the QoTech facilities Emi ventures, the more expansive the sci-fi mystery becomes. A colorful cast of hacker allies help Emi discover her connection to a distant alien race and unlock powers unlike anything she could have imagined.
Yars Rising celebrates the Yars franchise in WayForward’s distinct style of anime art, humor, retro game mechanics and storytelling virtuosity.
Features:
- 2D Platforming Action: Emi must jump, blast and sneak her way past waves of robotic and alien enemies. Her latent powers are revealed as the game progresses, granting her wild augments and biohacks that let her reach previously inaccessible areas. A sprawling, interconnected map allows for hours of exploration
- Sci-Fi Intrigue: A seemingly bottomless mystery takes Emi from drab office buildings into hidden underground labs, and even to the farthest reaches of space as she uncovers the dark truth behind the QoTech corporation and discovers her own personal connection to an alien race.
- Challenging Retro Minigames: A series of hacking minigames pay homage to the original Yars’ Revenge, which fans love for its top-down, quick twitch gameplay.
- Stealth Traversal: Emi can’t always shoot or jump her way out of a jam – tense sections of stealth gameplay force her to duck into the shadows to hide from relentless security guards.
- Classic WayForward Aesthetics: With fantastically rendered 3D environments and an ensemble of captivating characters, the WayForward team brings Emi’s story to life as only they can.
- Play the OG: Discover the first game in the Yars franchise by playing WayForward’s modern take on the Yars’ Revenge, accessible right from the main menu.
REVIEW: Princess Peach: Showtime! is jack of all trades, master of few
All the world is a stage
Peach has come a long way since her days as a damsel in distress. Sure, she still occasionally gets kidnapped by Bowser, but now she also gets to play sports, drive karts, and even join Mario on some of his adventures. Plus, she had a pretty great outing in last year’s Super Mario Bros. Movie courtesy of Anya Taylor-Joy. Still, when it comes to the video games, she’s typically relegated to a secondary role (with the exception of 2005’s less than beloved Super Princess Peach on the DS).
Princess Peach: Showtime! (the exclamation mark is mandatory) is looking to change all that by finally giving Peach the spotlight that she so rightly deserves. After all, she’s the princess of the entire Mushroom Kingdom! Surely, she gets up to some fascinating business when Mario’s not around. She could be managing matters of state, overseeing additions to her famous castle, or perhaps traveling to faraway lands as a visiting dignitary…
As it turns out, the area that Showtime! Chooses to focus on is Peach’s leisure time. Our heroine is on a trip to the local theatre to see a production being put on by a new species of character called Theets (get it?!). When Peach arrives however, it turns out that the theatre has been taken over by a villain even more treacherous and frightening than Bowser - Madame Grape and her Sour Bunch (they’re kind of like the Raisinets, but less wrinkly). With all the plays in disarray, and their lead characters missing, it’s up to Peach to take on their starring roles and restore order to the place.
This is definitely a new angle for Princess Peach to tackle, and the theme allows for a wide variety of gameplay possibilities. Whether or not that variety makes for an overall satisfying game experience is a different story…
