First Dwarf "Co-op" trailer

Always better with a buddy

14 June 2024
by rawmeatcowboy 0

The developers at Star Drifters have shared a new trailer for First Dwarf to spread the word on this upcoming title. Players can tackle the challenges, trials, and tribulations the game offers alone or with a friend in co-op mode, and you can see that in action above.

In First Dwarf, players become Tru— a dwarven explorer who sets out to build colonies on the floating islands of Driftland. Shipwrecked Tru must prepare for the dangers of the sky-high land, building defenses and infrastructure for the future colonists. Fortunately, with dwarven engineering skills, he can repair and pilot a powerful mech, which proves itself in combat, gathering resources and building. With various upgrades, this pinnacle of fantasy tech will eventually become the ultimate exploration machine. The mech’s offensive arsenal will also come in handy, as the uncharted lands are inhabited by mysterious creatures hostile to the dwarven newcomers.

But the gigantic mech is not enough to uncover all the mysteries of Driftland. Ragna, a she-dragon, is a playable companion who aids Tru in his quest. Her small size, ability to fly, and breathe fire make her a great addition to the dwarven skills of the protagonist. The game can be played in co-op (split screen and online) with each protagonist doing their job.

Building a colony and managing the settlers is another part of Tru’s job. With tower defense mechanisms, the settlement can be prepared for the worst. But it’s not all about survival —Tru will have to balance and fulfill the needs of new inhabitants, providing them with resources, shelter, and entertainment to boost their happiness. Only a prosperous society will allow our protagonist to pursue his own personal goal—discovering what evil taints these lands and what happened to the previous dwarven expeditions, including the one led by his father.

Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord is out of early access and available across a bevy of platforms, Switch included. What better time to get Digital Eclipse on the pod to talk about it?

Atari has assembled a party consisting of Ian Sherman (Senior Engineer), Nick Bruty (Art Director), and Justin Rosenthal-Kambic (Animation Lead) to get deep into the maze of development that’s brought this classic to modern platforms as only Digital Eclipse can do.

The first party-based RPG video game ever released, Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord was a direct inspiration to series like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. Digital Eclipse’s revival preserves the appeal of the classic, with many upgrades for modern role-playing game fans.

Since its release on the Nintendo GameCube nearly twenty years ago, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door has been considered an all-time classic, and a mainstay in anyone’s conversation about important and high-quality Mario RPG titles. The Thousand-Year Door has a similarly important role to me, personally—it’s a game I played religiously growing up, and one that I’ve continued to appreciate more and more over the years. As such, this remake has huge shoes to fill: it has to represent the legacy of the original, while also updating it with meaningful improvements that don’t over-saturate the game and dilute what made it so good in the first place. And so all of this begs the question… does The Thousand-Year Door on Switch succeed as a remake, or does it merely live in a paper-thin shadow of the original GameCube release?

The Map has been set, the die is waiting to be cast, and your role choice as Killer or Survivor lies before you. Dead by Daylight: Dungeons & Dragon is out now. Here’s what you need to know about what awaits in this deadly new adventure.

Our story unfolds in the crumbling Forgotten Ruins, where the arch-villain, Vecna—The Lich, will stop at nothing to achieve his gruesome ambitions. Aestri Yazar, a Bard, has found herself cast into this forsaken land. She must survive at all costs—for who else will tell the tale should she perish?

How you play and succeed in this adventure is up to you. Will you customize your look and venture into the dark dungeon with your party? Or will you choose your spells and sow the seeds of chaos as you’ve done many times before?

This is Dead by Daylight: Dungeons & Dragons.

Vecna—Dark Spellcaster, Conqueror of Realms

What would a tale be without a villain to define it? Embody the role of legendary tyrant Vecna—The Lich, as the newest Killer. The Whispered One. Lord of the Rotted Tower. The Master of Secrets. Few dare speak his true name, for his is a breed of evil unlike any other and his thirst for dark knowledge can never be satiated.

As he travelled through realm after realm, the contents of his Book of Vile Darkness grew larger. The dark spells within its pages gave rise to an empire, stoking fear in all who stood in his way. Harness this book and cast 4 spells to terrorize and decimate the unwanted pests standing in your way.

Channeling his necromancy, Flight of the Damned conjures 5 flying spectral entities in a cone-shaped form, passing through obstacles and damaging any Survivor it hits. Fly elevates Vecna from the ground, making him move quickly in a forced-forward motion. While flying, he can pass through one Pallet or Vault, letting him quickly cover great distances. A well-known Dungeons & Dragons Spell, Mage Hand creates a ghastly, phantasmic hand that can tag nearby Pallets. If the Pallet is lowered, the hand will raise it. If it’s already raised, it blocks use of it for a few seconds, putting you that much closer to a fleeing Survivor. Dispelling Sphere conjures a moving AOE sphere that is undetectable to Survivors. Should they come in contact with it, their location is revealed, and their precious Magical Items become disabled.

Vecna and his spellbook introduce magic to Dead by Daylight in a way never before explored. Use these abilities to tap into a dark new method of conquering your foes and spreading fear wherever you roam.

Aestri Yazar—A Bard’s Ingenuity

Words and music possess a power far beyond mere vibrations of air. This fact, every Bard holds dear.

Don this power as Bard Aestri Yazar, Dead by Daylight’s new Survivor. Unknowingly, a quest to ensure the balance of good and evil led her to her final adventure in a place not often – if ever – sung about.

But fear not, for so long as they have their wit and voice, a Bard is not alone. Their words, and the magic weaved through them, offer access to 3 unique perks.

Mirrored Illusion spawns a static copy of the Survivor in front of a Totem, Chest, Generator or Exit Gate for a limited time before deactivating. Bardic Inspiration empowers allies through a stirring performance. While standing still, begin a performance that gives nearby party members a temporary buff to Skill Checks once completed. How much of a boost they receive, however, is determined by the roll of a d20. When not in motion for a set amount of time, Still Sight automatically activates, revealing the aura of the Killer as well as all nearby Generators and Chests.

In addition to Aestri the Elf, players can choose to play as a male-presenting human Bard, named Baermar Uraz. Several Outfits and accessory options are also available for each Bard, because what’s an adventurer without their gear?

A Tower. A Lair. A Dungeon.

The setting for this journey lies in the Forgotten Ruins, a thrilling new Map which is part of the Decimated Borgo Realm. It is here that Vecna has chosen to make his domain. Beneath the ruins of a ravaged tower lies an underground lair of terrible experiments, arcane lore, horrifying secrets, and even some surprises for long-time D&D fans.

New Gameplay: The Dice Decides All

It wouldn’t be Dungeons & Dragons without the dice roll and loot. When playing against Vecna, 7 Chests are scattered across the Map. Seeking out their loot gives access to untold powers.

When opening one of these Chests, a d20 is rolled to determine its contents. Rolling a 2 to 4 gets you a regular Dead by Daylight item. Rolling a 5 to 19 evens the playing field with a Magic Item. Each Survivor can equip up to 2 Magic Items at once, a pair of Boots and a pair of Gauntlets. Each of these Magic Items activate when Vecna casts a given spell and is designed to counter it.

The Boots/Gauntlets of the Interloper reveals the Aura of Pallets affected by Mage Hand as and gives Haste for 3 seconds. The Boots/Gauntlets of the Nightwatch give the Survivor a glimpse of the spectral entities conjured by Flight of the Damned. The Boots/ Gauntlets of the Archivist reveals the Aura of Vecna’s Dispelling Sphere The Boots/Gauntlets of the Skyguard let the Survivor see Vecna’s Aura when he casts Fly.

Rolling a 20, a critical success, grants one of two powerful Magic Items that can be used like a Perk.

The Eye of Vecna allows the user to vanish for a brief period after exiting a Locker and grants them Haste. The Hand of Vecna allows the user to teleport from one Locker to another. If you’re lucky enough to get both, legend has it you can even combine their abilities.

They may be powerful, but power comes at a cost. Each time they are called upon, their user loses a Health State, so choose your moment wisely. As for the unlucky adventurers who roll a 1, a critical fail… a nasty surprise awaits.

Dead by Daylight: Dungeons & Dragons is available now on all supported platforms.

Square Enix reveals Dragon Quest rings

You know someone's gonna pop the question with these

It’s officially Dragon Quest Day, which means Square Enix has been celebrating the franchise all day long with announcements and reveals. The latest bit of fun isn’t about an upcoming game, but instead, some fancy jewelry for the franchise diehards out there.

Square Enix is releasing a new series of Dragon Quest rings that are inspired by Erdrick, the hero in the initial Dragon Quest trilogy. There are multiple styles available, with a silver ring priced at $175, a pink gold coating bumping the price up to $196, and a gold-coated version at $210.

There’s a lot more in the way of customization for these rings, as Square Enix will let customers add in an 8-character name or phrase to the ring. Along with that comes the option of choosing a birthstone for your ring, and even a special message as well. Those options include the following:

  • Slime – “The Slime has joined your ranks!”
  • King Slime – “What?!! The Slimes are…”
  • Liquid Metal Slime – “The Liquid Metal Slime has run away!”
  • Small Medal – “What? You’ve found a Small Medal!”
  • Sword – “A Critical Hit!”
  • Shield – “The Hero is protecting himself.”
  • January birthstone: Garnet
  • February birthstone: Amethyst
  • March birthstone: Aquamarine
  • April birthstone: Diamond
  • May birthstone: Emerald
  • June birthstone: Moonstone
  • July birthstone: Ruby
  • August birthstone: Peridot
  • September birthstone: Blue Sapphire
  • October birthstone: Pink Tourmaline
  • November birthstone: Blue Topaz
  • December birthstone: Tanzanite

All the way back in May 2021, Square Enix revealed that they were working on an HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest III. Following that announcement, an update from the team in Dec. 2022 said that everyone was working hard to bring the project to fruition.

9+ months later, we got another status update from the devs when Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii mentioned that development was progressing quite steadily. A bit later, Horii again shared comment on the remake, saying that he spent time at Square Enix playtesting the title. Apparently he was at the studio until 10 PM playing, so it seems there was quite a lot of the game to see.

Today gives us our latest update on the game, and it’s definitely the biggest yet. The above teaser trailer was shared, and it officially confirms that the project is heading Switch’s way. It was always assumed that a Switch version would see release, but it’s nice to have confirmation.

This teaser also has people wondering if something more is going on here than just Dragon Quest III HD-2D. There’s some speculation that the trailer using the phrase “the legacy begins” would point to other titles getting the HD-2D treatment, as the third installment in Dragon Quest wouldn’t exactly be a “beginning.”

As the first three Dragon Quest titles all relate to the adventure of Erdrick, some believe that a trilogy of HD-2D titles could be in the works. Again, that’s just speculation for now, as Square Enix has only ever officially confirmed Dragon Quest III HD-2D.

Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord Is quite an old, but influential game. Its a shame there’s no way to play it in beautiful, remastered 3D glory… Oh wait, there is now, as Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord 3D Remaster is launching on Switch today. A pretty cool detail from this remake is that it is built straight from the original, meaning you can switch between new and old on the fly!

In 1981, SirTech released the first game in what would soon become a legendary RPG series – Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord for the Apple II. As the very first party-based dungeon crawler, it was one of the key games that launched the role-playing genre, directly inspiring enduring series like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Demon’s Souls.

Now Digital Eclipse, a studio dedicated to the historical preservation of video games, is treating RPG fans worldwide to a full 3D remaster of this genre-defining game.

A LEGEND REBORN

Digital Eclipse’s Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord revival is built directly on top of the original Apple II game’s code, preserving the appeal of the classic while also incorporating modern graphics and improved party management, navigation, spellcasting, and combat.

While the remake may look, sound, and feel completely new, the original Apple II game is under the hood – you can even view the original interface while you’re playing.

Craft your own party of adventurers and head into the labyrinth at the behest of the mad overlord Trebor, in search of the amulet stolen by the evil wizard Werdna. Battle challenging monsters, avoid hidden traps, and find your way through the dungeon for the ultimate showdown with Werdna himself.

Enthusiastic player feedback of an Early Access build contributed to numerous improvements in the final game, including:

Beautiful new graphics & animations for a game that, by necessity, only offered rudimentary visuals, now with the power of Unreal Engine.

User-selectable options that allow players to tailor the gameplay to their liking, including popular options from the console editions of the game. Players can also choose no new options at all to experience the original, more challenging gameplay.

An in-game Bestiary that records key information on enemies as they’re encountered and offers strategic advice on their strengths and weaknesses.

A lush musical soundtrack from composer Winifred Philips, including some fan-favorite themes from Wizardry history.

A controller-friendly interface, with a one-button shortcut for fast combat choices.

Fully localized into English, Japanese, French, Spanish, Italian, and German.

As you progress through the game, you can customize your character’s appearance, abilities, and moveset, allowing you to create a truly unique and powerful fighter. The fun doesn’t stop there!
